everybody around me is white. meanwhile, her best friend is a brown girl whose parents are from africa but they are from egypt and so people tell her well, you know, you're not really black, you're african but not really african-american. both these girls are grappling with what it means to be brown skinned and who is really black in america today. >> this is a personal topic for you. it's part of your interest in all this. at what point did you realize, not to be indiscreet here, that your color changed the way people perceived you? >> early on. i grew up in an all white neighborhood in long island, so people made it very clear that our family didn't quite fit in. i have a similar background to nya's. my mom is black, my dad is white but my parents were very direct about our identity. we're black. my mother is cuban so we're latino. for us it's a very different situation than for a lot of young people today. growing number of young people are mixed race and they're trying to work out their identity and it's really tough for some of them. >> i know from the census department that the g

. the brown and the gray. what are the differences between them and how are they clashing now that we get closer and closer to the fiscal cliff? >> the brown and the gray is a phrase i've been using for the last few years to describe the two giant generations that will shape american life in the coming decades. the brown is the millennial, the most diverse in american history. over 40% nonwhite. the gray is the aging baby boom which is joining the silent generation in a huge senior cohort that is 80% white. and they have very different political inclinations, preferences and different interests at stake in the fiscal cliff and budget negotiations. on the one hand, taxes verse spending and so does the kind of spending. discretionary spending mostly investments in the future. entitlement spending mostly income security for the older generation. >> so who benefits if we do cross the fiscal cliff? >> i think there is no question that getting the debt and deficit under control is in the interests of younger generations so they are not saddled with debt solely for our current consumption. but h
. higher tax rates for the wealthy. congressman brown, will the president get his wish? >> i think the president wants higher tax rates for everybody. even the lowest paid employees in this country is pushing towards. the problem is not the higher rates and taxes which i totally oppose, we have to talk about spending. spending is the problem and what's going to us off the cliff. it is leading towards a collapse of america that is going to hurt the poorest americans and seniors on a limited income. those working on the middle class americans. >> speaker boehner said many, many times before, the problem facing washington is not taxes being too low, but spending being too high. we know your side wants spending cuts and cutting, but medicare. we saw this poll today. they said it doesn't cut medicare. morgan deduction, 66% of americans said don't cut that. tax deductions for making donations to charity. 72% said don't cut that. the numbers just make me wonder, do republicans in congress who clearly want to cut these things, do they have the support of constituents? do you? >> the proble
